Frequently Asked Questions
Annual tuition is $9000 per student. It may be split into payments that span 10 months. There is a 10% sibling discount. Families pay an Application Fee of $250 when submitting the application. There is a $500 Instructional Supply fee due in July. This pays for all student workbooks, textbooks, readers, science, and art supplies. Additionally, it covers all field trip and in-house presentation fees. We do not ask parents to pay for activities or supplies throughout the year.
Our English Language Arts (reading and writing), History, and Bible programs are integrated through a program called Sonlight. Students receive 30 minutes of daily Bible and devotional time, 90 minutes of ELA instruction, and 45 minutes of history every day.
Math instruction comes from the Singapore Math series. It balances conceptual understanding with skill practice. Upper School students have a variety of high-level math courses available including algebra, geometry, and calculus. Students receive 90 minutes of math instruction daily. Apologia is our science curriculum. It moves elementary students through science topics as covered in the creation chapters in Genesis. In middle school students do a survey of earth and physical science topics. In high school, students are offered a variety of lab courses like biology, chemistry and agricultural science. Students receive 45 minutes of science instruction daily. Instruction includes hands-on activities in every unit as well as written work in a lab journal.
We follow a “normal” schedule with arrival at 7:45 and dismissal around 3:00, depending on the campus. Students begin the day with devotion time and instruction. They have outdoor recess every day, weather permitting. Students have an enrichment time for 45 minutes every day—Art, Music, PE, and Library/STEM. We offer before and after school care for an additional fee. Students can bring their lunch or participate in our catered hot-lunch service.
A Brookside education is different in many ways. In summary, we are committed to smaller class sizes. Younger grades have no more than 12 students. Older grades have no more than 18 students. This allows for a more individualized instructional plan and deeper relationships with teachers and peers. Our instructional choices allow for a rigorous, hands-on education where deep understanding and the ability to communicate effectively are priorities. Every Friday students experience PLUS Days where they are exposed to guest speakers, community service projects, and other unique experiences that allow them to apply the skills and knowledge they’ve learned throughout the week. We also offer specialized programs for students with IEPs, learning disabilities, and the academically gifted.
BCA is fully registered, licensed, and in compliance with the state of North Carolina’s expectations for private schools in our state. The North Carolina Department of Non-Public Education (DPNE) is the governing body for home schools and private schools. Annually, we fulfill the requirements laid out by DNPE and are in compliance and good standing.
Parents sometimes ask if BCA is “accredited.” When using this language, parents are often asking about a school’s ability to graduate students with a valid diploma. The resounding answer to that question is yes, we are fully licensed by the state to graduate students with a valid NC diploma. Furthermore, we ensure students who are seeking to continue their education at the college level have the necessary core classes for entry into the public university system of North Carolina. We have already had several students to do so. To graduate, we require the same core classes as you would find at any public school in North Carolina.
In the private school sector, the word “accreditation” refers to the voluntary entry into an accountability process with an outside, private association such as ACSI (the Association of Christian Schools International). While we welcome accountability and reviews of our processes, procedures, curriculum, and staff, the accreditation process is massive. It is a multi-year process that is expensive and in some cases, can result in a school losing some of the flexibility and freedom we enjoy in the self-governance model we currently employ. BCA has not yet chosen to go the route of accreditation. There are both benefits and drawbacks to entering into the process and gaining membership into one of these associations.
When high school students enroll at Brookside, we reserve the right to evaluate their transcript and accept or deny course credits from other schools. Likewise, if students withdraw from Brookside while in high school, other schools may choose to accept or deny course credits.
